Reliance Jio may launch its own 5G handsets with 5G services

Reliance Jio has big plans not just for this year but also for 2020. While this year the Mukesh Ambani-led company is gearing up for the commercial rollout of its FTTH service Jio GigaFiber, the year 2020 will see the launch of its 5G services.

The talks of Jio working on 5G services have been going on since 2017 but now a report from Financial Chronicle says that Jio could launch the service by April next year. In fact the company is said to be in talks with various vendors for assembling the phone.

According to a source cited by the report, Jio would begin the roll out of 5G services once the spectrum auction takes in place in July in India and the ecosystem is developed for the services. As per the report, Jio may launch its 5G handsets simultaneously with the launch of the 5G services so that the users do not face any problems in experiencing the high-speed 5G services of the company due to lack of 5G phones.

“This will be slightly different than what Jio had done when it launched 4G services in 2016 September while 4G handsets it launched much later. They will replicate their 4G mobile services and feature phone model in 5G as well but the service and handset will be together,” source told the publication. Just like the 4G, Jio aims to disrupt the 5G market as well with its services in 2020.

Jio would not only challenge the telecom operators with its 5G services but will also be a threat to Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and Xiaomi that have plans to launch 5G handsets in India.

The report states that not just the 5G handsets, Jio could also lead the 5G services race by launching its services ahead of others because the company is in a position to start the testing of services in just 6-8 months of spectrum auction. This means that if the auction takes place in June-July this year, the company could begin testing of the equipment by January next year.

Jio’s much-awaited Jio GigaFiber is expected to come by March this year. The service is already available in some parts of the country but is still in sort of beta rollout and it is free. The installation is free of cost but you pay Rs 4,500 security deposit which is refundable.
